Allerzip® Waterproof Bed Bug & Dust Mite Mattress Encasement
Protect-A-Bed® Allerzip® — a full six-sided waterproof mattress encasement designed to help protect mattresses from bed bugs, dust mites, allergens, spills and stains. Sensitive Choice approved, OEKO-TEX certified, backed by a 10-year warranty. Genuine stock, shipped from our Melbourne warehouse.
Why Australian Homes Trust Allerzip Technology
In our unique Australian climate, mattresses can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria and skin flakes. The Allerzip doesn’t just sit on top like a standard protector; it completely surrounds your bed. Using the patented Miracle Layer™, this protector is whisper-quiet and highly breathable, allowing air to circulate while remaining totally Dust Mite & Bed Bug proof.
Note: While the Allerzip is 100% waterproof, for heavy bed-wetting or incontinence, we recommend pairing it with our Waterproof Linen Protectors for easier midnight changes.

The Allerzip Dust Mite & Bed Bug Mattress Encasement is renowned for its “BugLock®” three-sided zipper system. This isn’t a standard zip; it features a SecureSeal™ mechanism making it the premier bed bug mattress cover in Australia.

Why This One, and How It Works
We’ve fitted the Allerzip Dust Mite & Bed Bug Mattress Encasement on our own beds, supplied it to asthma clinics, hotels and short-stay accommodation operators since 2007, and answered the “will this actually stop bed bugs” question more times than we can count. Short answer: yes, provided it’s fitted correctly and washed on schedule — details below, not just what’s on the box.
Unlike a fitted protector, the Allerzip is a full six-sided zip encasement — it wraps the entire mattress. That matters for two reasons: bed bugs can get in an unsealed mattress, and existing dust mite allergen inside an old mattress needs the whole thing sealed off, not just the sleep surface, before it stops being a trigger.
The waterproof barrier is a thin polyurethane laminate rather than a vinyl sheet, so it lets air and heat vapour through and doesn’t crinkle when you move — the two most common complaints about older plastic-backed protectors.
Why Choose a Full Mattress Encasement for Bed Bugs and Dust Mites?
We stock the full Protect-A-Bed encasement range, so this isn’t an upsell — if you don’t need full encasement, we’d rather tell you.
| Allerzip Dust Mite & Bed Bug Mattress Encasement | Basic Waterproof Fitted Mattress Protector | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A full six-sided zip encasement that wraps the entire mattress, sealing it completely | A fitted, elasticated protector that covers the top and sides only, like a fitted sheet |
| Dust mite & bed bug protection | Yes — fully seals the mattress on all sides, blocking entry and stopping existing allergens from escaping | No — the exposed base and open sides leave gaps that dust mites and bed bugs can still get through |
| Waterproofing | 100% waterproof against sweat, spills and bedwetting | 100% waterproof on the sleep surface only; base and sides of the mattress remain unprotected |
| Best for | Households managing asthma, eczema, or allergies; anyone treating or preventing a bed bug problem; rental and commercial beds | Anyone who just wants everyday spill and moisture protection without bed bug concerns |
| Feel & noise | Breathable polyurethane laminate — quiet, no crinkle, minimal heat trapping | Available in cotton, bamboo, neofabric, & tencel sleep surfaces |
| Installation | Fits over the entire mattress and zips closed — takes a couple of minutes longer to fit | Stretches over the mattress like a fitted sheet — quick to put on |
| Price from | $134.95 | $35.95 |

If dust mites, bed bugs, or allergies aren’t a concern in your household, the Basic Waterproof Fitted Protector will do the job for less. If anyone sleeping on the mattress has a diagnosed allergy, asthma, or eczema — or you’re dealing with a bed bug issue — the full encasement is the one worth paying for.
A mattress encasement does not act as an insecticide. Its purpose is to create a physical barrier that prevents bed bugs from entering or escaping the encased mattress when correctly installed and maintained.

Fitting It Correctly
- Wash before first use — factory packaging residue can irritate sensitive skin.
- Stand the mattress on its side if possible; it’s far easier than fitting it flat.
- Work the zip fully around and check the locking tab has engaged — the step most people skip, and the difference between fully sealed and a gap at the corner.
- Add your fitted sheet over the top — the encasement isn’t designed to be slept on directly.

Washing and Long-Term Care
The waterproof layer fails first if it isn’t cared for, not the fabric — sweat, body salts and skin cells break it down over time, which is usually the real story behind a “waterproof protector that leaked” complaint.
- Wash immediately after unboxing, before first use
- Wash at least monthly if it isn’t covered by a fitted protector — more often if it’s the only layer
- Hot machine wash, 60°C
- Tumble dry warm, max 60°C
- Wash and dry together with linen or towels, not alone
- Dry completely before refitting or storing
- No bleach, no ironing, no dry cleaning, no solvents
Not following these care instructions can void your warranty. Packaging is fully recyclable through standard council recycling.
What It’s Made Of

Why Buy This From Cover & Protect
We’re the authorised Australian retailer, not the manufacturer — which matters for two reasons. Customer Reviews
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Allerzip protect against? Dust mites, bed bugs, allergens, sweat, spills and general moisture. Because it encases the mattress on all six sides, nothing gets in or out, including through the base.
How is this different from a normal fitted mattress protector? A fitted protector covers the top and sides and leaves the base exposed. An encasement like the Allerzip zips all the way around, sealing the entire mattress.
Will it make the bed hot or noisy? No. The waterproof layer is a thin, breathable polyurethane laminate rather than vinyl, so air moves through it and it doesn’t crinkle when you move.
Do I still need a fitted sheet on top? Yes — the encasement sits directly on the mattress, underneath your regular fitted sheet.
Is it actually waterproof, or just water-resistant? Fully waterproof against spills, sweat and bedwetting. For heavy overnight incontinence use, pairing it with a washable waterproof underlay makes midnight changes easier.
Can I use an electric blanket with it? Yes, it’s safe to use underneath your usual bedding.
What depth mattress does it fit? Standard sizing fits 20–40 cm; extra-deep covers 40–50 cm for pillow-top mattresses. Measure at the thickest point before ordering.
How often do I need to wash it, and how? At least monthly if it’s your only layer. Hot wash at 60°C, tumble dry warm to a max of 60°C, and wash/dry with other linen rather than alone.
Is it suitable for asthma or eczema? Yes — Sensitive Choice® approved and Eczema Association Australasia endorsed, on the basis that sealing the mattress removes ongoing exposure to dust mite allergen.
What’s the warranty, and what voids it? 10-year manufacturer warranty against fabric and manufacturing defects, honoured in full through an authorised retailer. Not following wash care (particularly the 60°C monthly hot wash) can void cover.
